Completed in 1910, The Scarbrough Building, at the southwest corner of Sixth and Congress exemplifies the Chicago style of architecture popular at the start of the 20th Century in America. The Scarbrough Building was Austin’s first steel and concrete structure, and at eight stories, a bona fied “skyscraper.” Emerson Monroe Scarbrough brought further innovation to city commerce when his became the first dry goods store to extend credit to its customers – and the first to attach price tags to each article of merchandise, thereby abolishing the haggling system. His progressive style led “Scarbrough’s” as it is known locally, to become the finest department store in Central Texas. Now, the building’s location at the corner of Sixth and Congress offers office space in the very heart of the city. Here commercial tenants enjoy elegance along with impeccable service in the workplace. This is not your typical sterile office building. It has hardwood floors, marble details and a landlord responsive to tenants’ needs. It is even rumored to have ghosts – friendly ghosts, of course.
